THE LAND, THE SEA, AND AN "AMPHIBIAN" OLIVE TREE WITH NOBLE ROOTS
THE SOIL
The family olive groves are located between the semi-mountainous village of Kouspades and the traditional fishing village of Boukaris.
In the mountainous Kouspades the soil is quite rocky, with properties that favor the wild Lianolia.
The village of Kouspades was created during the Venetian period by a nobleman trusted by the Venetian commander, called Kouspas.
Signs of that time are evident even today in some of the village’s houses.
THE SEA
Corfu is the largest and most picturesque island in the Ionian Sea. It is located at the edge of the Adriatic Sea, between Southern Italy and Northern Greece and is lined with countless picturesque bays, coves of exceptional beauty and numerous capes while it is surrounded by 217 km of lace-like coastline where the rich plant life reaches to its very edge.
The sea is 650 meters away from the olive groves and surrounds the estates on the right and left.
The olive groves are watered by its aura and their soil is irrigated by the salt water of the subsoil.
For these unique reasons that this terroir offers, the fruits of the trees acquire unique organoleptic characteristics.
AN “AMPHIBIAN” OLIVE TREE
The cultivation of Lianolia is especially demanding. One might say it’s great need for the liquid element makes it a variety of “amphibians”.
It requires a rocky soil, the sea breeze, but above all, it requires high levels of humidity.
Corfu is an island with a Mediterranean climate that is however characterized by long, frequent and dense winter rainfall and regular cool rains all year round. This is the main reason why Lianolia ‘loved’ Corfu almost exclusively.
The leaves of this variety are very long and narrow, deep green on one side and gray-green on the other, while its small cylindrical and conic shape fruit has a high content of oil juice (20%) which, with proper processing, can give a uniquely enjoyable, umami and high nutritional value olive oil.
AN OLIVE TREE WITH ARISTOCRATIC ROOTS…
There are 500-year-old trees in the family estates. Their roots go back to the years when Corfu was ruled by the nobles of the Republic of Venice.
Its olive groves still include many olive trees over 100 years old, while many younger trees are constantly being planted, expanding and rejuvenating their composition.
